Your Mirror - Friend Or Foe?

103 7
Mirrors are used in many scenarios for practicing.
For example; Golf, where you can see how you are addressing the ball or setting up for that long shot, Fencing where careful review of your foot and hand work will show you what an opponent sees, it will demonstrate to you what moves you are telegraphing in advance.
In the same way practicing your response to questions in front of the mirror shows you what the interviewer will also see.
How embarrassing is that, standing in front of the mirror and talking to yourself? From the basic Tell me about Yourself question through to the more complex behavioral questions I always suggest that the client uses the mirror as their starting point for their practice.
Practice interviewing is one of my more favorite activities as it provides people with the opportunity to get live experience for what is often the most stressful time in the job search process.
Here are 3 key issues you can address in your practice: Appearance - With the death of wearing formal attire to work many people are not comfortable wearing a business suit or jacket to the office anymore.
For many men this also includes not being familiar with wearing a tie.
Try the clothes on and stand in front of the mirror, practice knotting the tie so that you are comfortable and you look relaxed.
Remember there is no second chance to make a first impression (old but so true).
Body Language - There are many nuances to this subject but to keep it simple follow a few basic rules: A firm, brief handshake is always a good start, use your hands to make a point but not to pretend that you are directing traffic and keep fidgeting in your seat to a minimum.
Eye Contact - When a candidate does not make eye contact with an interviewer it suggests a certain dishonesty, this does not mean that you have to stare at them but a regular glance especially when you start to answer a question is usually sufficient.
