The brave new world of aluminum and diamond plate truck tool boxes
I can remember back when I was a boy, riding with my grandfather in his pickup truck. It was a 50's model Chevy that had certainly seen its share of jobs and jobsites! He was a carpenter by trade and an avid collector and owner of all kinds of tools! He always had his jobsite toolbox in the bed of the truck. I can remember it rolling and rattling around back there as we drove around, sliding and banging against the bed walls with each turn, and tumbling like big dice when he hit a pot hole or a bump in the road! Being the smart man that he was ( he was my grandfather for crisake! ) he moved some bags of fertilizer, his spare tire, and a couple of 5 gallon paint buckets into the bed, and surrounded that tool box with them. He wedged things in around the wheel wells so nothing moved. Problem solved!!
In today's world ( which he would have LOVED! ) most pickup owners have a large tool box mounted sideways across the bed, up behind the cab. It is secured to the bed ( YES! ) and its location leaves the rest of the bed open for gear and stuff to be hauled! You can also mount these bad boys to the bed sides, in the tail area, around your trailer hitch, or behind or under your seats. I know he would be drooling!
I think he would have also enjoyed the variety of sturdy materials today's boxes are made from - diamond plate, heavy duty plastic, and steel. All are solidly built to hold up to the pounding they take in the back of your rig. There are lots of excellent tool box makers out there, not to mention solid webstores that sell them. Do a little serious shopping online, and see what's out there for you! Finding the right aluminum tool box for your rig will certainly be money well spent!
