6 Topics That Always Start a Conversation with Guys
- If you're in a bookstore and you see a guy you'd like to talk to, check out what type of books he's looking at to give you an idea of what he likes to read. If you're familiar with the genre, you can strike up a conversation about whether you're a fan and why, and ask him for his opinion. If you don't know the genre, you can tell him you've always been interested in it and ask him for a recommendation on where to start. Talking with a guy about his hobbies or interests can blossom into conversation, even if you're unfamiliar with some aspects, because he'll most likely be happy to explain them to you.
- You can talk about music with a guy in most locations because there's almost always music playing in malls, grocery stores, bars, restaurants and convenience stores. To get his attention, you can comment on whether you like the song playing in a store. He may agree or disagree, but from there, you can easily ask him what kind of music he likes. If you're not familiar with it, you can ask him what it sounds like or how he got into it and offer to explain the kinds of music you like. You can also ask him if he plays any instruments or knows of any upcoming local concerts or bands that play in the area.
- Food and drink make great conversations at the grocery store or at a restaurant or bar. If you're at the supermarket, you can walk around picking up different ingredients and talk about a new recipe you're trying with a cute guy. If the two of you are buying the same things, you can comment on them and talk about why you like the items and how you plan to prepare them. If your guy's passionate about food, he may have a recipe to share with you. At a restaurant or bar, you can start talking by telling a guy about a great drink or dinner special, then ask him what types of things he usually orders when he's there.
- Many guys keep tabs on some type of professional or college sport, even if it's only haphazardly. Walking into a sports bar wearing a jersey or hat of a team that's playing should get you the attention of someone. If you know at least a little about the team, then you know enough to start a conversation. You can start by asking a guy the score of the game. If he's rooting for the rival team, you can flirt by teasing him about why your team's going to win. If he's rooting for your team, you can tell him who your favorite players are and why. He's bound to start talking about different players and the team's record after your opening.
- If you're at work or school and you want to talk to a male coworker or classmate, you can start by asking him how the day's treating him or what he thinks about the class or teacher. Sympathizing with him about a bad day or joking about something that happened to you can keep the conversation going. If you're talking with a guy you don't work with, it's still safe to try the work topic. You can ask him where he works, how long he's been there and whether he likes it. You can then turn the topic to dream jobs by telling him about where you work but what you'd really want to do if you had the choice -- or perhaps what you are studying to do in the future.
- People watching can bring you into a conversation with an observant guy. If you're at a club, bar or store and see a guy watching someone do something out of the ordinary, you can start a conversation by asking him what he thinks about people who dress, dance, talk or act out in that way. You can then tell him an anecdote about something wacky that happened to you or something you saw on television relating to that person's quirks.
