    • 1). Purchase and connect a CAC reader to the desired computer or laptop. These are small devices that are often USB connected. There is a slot to insert the DoD (Department of Defense) issued ID cards such as those for the U.S. Army personnel or other government and military personnel.

    • 2). Download the three required software, driver or certificate items (see "Resources"). The CAC Reader driver allows the CAC Reader to work with AKO in the process of encrypting email. The DoD Certificates aid in the encryption process and are a necessary component. ActivClient software is also required for AKO email encryption.

    • 3). Insert the appropriate ID card, with the front of the card (picture-side) facing up toward the ceiling with the CAC Reader set flat on the desk. The bottom of the card goes in first so the top of the picture is still visible when fully inserted. Log into AKO after the three downloads are finished and the CAC Reader is connected properly.

    • 4). Select "OPTIONS" from the AKO menu options, then click on "MAIL" and then click on "SETTINGS" to bring up the encryption options. Scroll down to the bottom of the "Settings" page and make sure that the bottom two boxes are both checked: one for "Sign all outgoing messages" and the other for "Encrypt all outgoing messages." Beneath these two boxes is a "DoD Certificates" dropdown menu. Assuming the DoD Certificates were installed correctly, there should be one in this dropdown menu with the user's name. Select that DoD Certificate.

    • 5). Click "Compose" to create a new outgoing email message. At the bottom of this message window there is a set of check-able boxes, including one for "Encrypt." Check the appropriate boxes to sign and encrypt the message. The email message is automatically encrypted. The message is decrypted by the recipient opening the email message with his CAC ID card connected.
