During their rise to the top however, they were able to build over 5,000 yachts. They were versatile in their designs, offering boats from just 18 foot in length to a huge 127 foot. Being so successful during the two World Wars, designing electric motors for boats to make the process of carrying soldiers and supplies in and out of war zones in safer and simpler ways, they decided to think outside pleasure yachts even more.
Elco also designed lifeboats, which were used by the U.S. Coast Guard. They worked with the navy of various different countries; they built an anti submarine motor and so on. Their PT boats still hold a particularly interesting piece of history, being that the first PT 109 was captained by none other than Lieutenant John F. Kennedy, who was later to become president.
