What Should I Plant Next to a Fence?
- A flowering shrub, such as Chinese abelia (Abelia chinensis), adds texture to plain fences. It has dark green foliage and clusters of fragrant, white flowers that bloom between July and September, and it grows to heights of 5 through 7 feet. You may expect Chinese abelia to grow well in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 7 though 9.
- Lemon bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus), which reaches heights of 10 to 15 feet, is a good choice for planting next to drab fences. The small tree---or large shrub---in spring is covered with 4- or 5-inch-long red flowers shaped like bottle brushes. Lemon bottlebrush has bright green foliage 1 to 3 inches in length and is hardy in USDA zones 8b through 11.
- Brown's honeysuckle (Lonicera x brownii) is a flowering vine that can rapidly cover a fence with its fast, twining growth habit. The deciduous vine blooms with orange-red flowers in spring and is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8. With a mature height of up to 8 feet, Brown's honeysuckle grows well in sun or partial shade.
