Insomnia is one of the most commonly reported sleeping difficulties, and can be the primary cause of sleep deprivation or the resulting effect of another condition.
Insomnia can result in making it difficult for a person to fall asleep, making it difficult to stay asleep, waking up too early in the morning and not feeling refreshed after sleep.
Insomnia can be brought on by stress, tension, anxiety or the symptoms of other medical conditions.
There are various treatments and natural remedies which are said to help combat insomnia, some of which are listed below.
  1. For short spells of insomnia, sleeping pills can be effective in helping a person get to sleep.
    However there are various downsides to taking pills for example, they can become addictive resulting in a person needing to take more for the effects to work.
    Also, some sleeping pills may result in severe side effects including feeling tired the next day, confusion, forgetfulness blurred vision, clumsiness and a dry mouth and throat.
    It is recommended that a doctor is consulted before consuming sleeping pills and that the instructions on the pills are followed closely.
  2. Establish a routine before going to sleep.
    Setting a regular time to go to bed and to wake up will help your body clock to adjust in a way that helps you go into a deeper sleep.
    Try to follow this throughout the week and at the weekend, taking no naps through the day.
  3. Create a peaceful environment to sleep in.
    Make sure your bedroom has no electronic equipment switched on when you are trying to go to sleep.
    The humming of electrical items can prevent your body from falling into a deep sleep.
  4. Make sure your bed is comfortable and tailored to help you get the best possible sleep.
    An uncomfortable bed and mattress can make you toss and turn throughout the night, not allowing you to get into the deep sleep which is vital for you to feel refreshed in the morning.
    Having a suitable bed can help you find a comfortable sleeping position to ensure a relaxing sleep.
    Adjustable beds can also include a system which provides a soothing massage to the user making it easier to drift into a good sleep.
    Obtaining an adjustable bed and mattress is a good way to help reduce insomnia.
  5. Avoid caffeine late in the day.
    Caffeine is a stimulant which will keep you awake at night therefore, avoiding it will help you sleep better.
