How to Avoid Using a Cell Phone
- 1). Keep the phone turned off and only use it for emergencies. Check your voicemail and text messages once a day to answer any important calls. Once your friends realize that you won't answer as quickly as they'd like, they'll find another way to get in touch with you.
- 2). Leave your cell phone in the car at night to force yourself to use your landline when you're home. Encourage everyone to call that number first instead of automatically dialing your cell.
- 3). Cancel your cell phone service and opt for a prepaid phone. Once you've used your allotted minutes, don't renew until the next month begins. Eventually, you'll learn to be more judicious with your talk time so you can keep the phone working throughout the month (see Resources below).
- 4). Use email to send quick messages to friends instead of text messaging on your cell phone. It will be easier for them to hit "reply" than to get their phones out and call you about the issue.
- 5). Take drastic measures if all else fails and your friends won't stop calling you on your cell phone despite repeated requests. For example, change your phone number and only give it to your family and work contacts to use in the event of an emergency. This will also cut down on the number of calls from "casual" acquaintances and telemarketers.
