Why Staines upon Thames
Most people who live in Staines feel that we live in a pretty good place, but wouldn't it be great if we could make it even better with little or no cost to residents! To achieve this we need to have more money coming into the town, fill the empty shops and offices and attract more tourists and visitors here.
Changing the name to Staines upon Thames is the first step to achieving this.
Staines upon Thames spans the river with pubs, hotels and restaurants on both sides. The town has 2 shopping centres, a pedestrian High Street with some excellent shops, 3 markets per week, a good cinema as well as the magnificent river running through the town. It's handy for Heathrow and the M25 and a short distance from Windsor, Legoland, Runnymede, Thorpe Park, Hampton Court, Richmond upon Thames and any easy train ride to London.
So why don't people come here? The main reason is because Staines is thought of by people who do not live in the area as a bit of a dump and most newspaper articles seem to endorse that! The fact is that people who don't know this area have absolutely no idea how nice it is - so, on the whole, they don't come here and don't want to come here. If you travel around the country and tell people you live in Staines, they are normally either very quiet or ask where it is. If you say you live by the River Thames, they immediately believe that it is a nice place to live.
This is what Staines upon Thames is about! Letting people and companies know that this is a great Thames side town.
If more people realised that it really is such a good place to visit, live and work, we should attract more tourists, more visitors and more companies, all with money to spend in our community. We would draw more and better high street shops, fill our empty office space and develop the wasteland at the eastern end of the High street. This in turn would create more jobs and more prosperity in the borough.
Furthermore with Government's proposed changes to local government funding, it is vital for us to attract more businesses to the Borough. The more businesses in the Borough the more the Council will receive in business rates and as the amount of businesses increase, the amount of rates collected will increase. A proportion of any additional business rates will be retained by the Borough Council and could be used by them to further improve our environment, hold back future Council Tax increases and provide better amenities in the borough.
Changing the name to Staines upon Thames would be little or no cost. Local signage is to be sponsored by businesses and letterheads need only be changed when they run out as the Royal Mail use the 1st line of the address & post code, not the town name. Maps, guides, reference books etc. will be changed when the publisher decides it is a good commercial decision. Not every sign will get changed immediately but the more the word gets round that Staines is upon Thames, the better for us all.
We have a prime asset in Staines - The River Thames. We need to use it to promote our town and make the most of it by having events that embrace it involving local charities, schools and people in the community like the one being organised for 20th May.
