How to Decorate Christmas Cookies
- 1). GET YOUR COOKIES -- Before you can decorate your Christmas cookies, you will need to either bake or buy your cookies. If you bake cookies, use any basic sugar cookie recipe and use Christmas cookie cutters. If you buy cookies, buy any plain cookie that can be decorated. Some store bought cookies will come in holiday shapes. If you can't find any shapes you like, you can use plain round vanilla cookies and decorate them to look like Christmas balls!
- 2). GET YOUR DECORATIVE SUPPLIES -- All you need to decorate Christmas cookies are a few basic ingredients for the icing (see next step) and some decorative sprinkles like colored sugar, jimmies, silver balls, etc. Just look in the aisle near the frosting and you will find lots of fun sprinkles for your Christmas cookies.
- 3). MAKE YOUR ICING -- For a basic icing, put about a cup of confectioner's sugar in a bowl and add a few drops of milk and stir. If the icing is too thick add a few more drops of milk and stir again. You can also add a drop of food coloring. Just keep adding milk or food coloring until you get icing that you can easily spread on the cookies. If it gets too thin just add more confectioner's sugar. If you want flavored icing you can add a drop of any flavored extract.
- 4). DECORATE YOUR COOKIES -- If you bake your cookies, wait until they cool before decorating them. If you buy cookies, you are ready to decorate! Spread some icing on the cookies then add sprinkles right away. You can also put your icing in a frosting bag with a tip with a small hole and write names on the cookies. You might also want to frost the cookies with icing then take more icing and thin it out a bit by adding milk then drizzling the icing over the frosted cookies. There are no rules to decorating Christmas cookies. Just have fun!
