Scarecrow Activity for Toddlers
- Use a craft to enhance a study on scarecrows or to help celebrate fall. Help toddlers turn a plastic spoon into a scarecrow puppet using common craft materials. Glue googly eyes onto the back of the spoon and cut an orange triangle out of felt to create the nose. Use a permanent marker to draw a smile on the face (an adult's job). Add tan yarn pieces as the hair and make a felt hat, shirt and pants. Cut hands and shoes out of felt, too. Assemble the scarecrow by gluing the pieces to the spoon.
- Toddlers love hands-on activities. Take toddlers on a field trip to a real working farm to see a scarecrow. Ask the farmer to briefly speak on the importance of a scarecrow and the purpose it serves. Have the toddlers stand next to a scarecrow and take their pictures. Another place to visit to see a scarecrow is a pumpkin patch.
- Read books to toddlers about scarecrows to help celebrate the fall season. Read age-appropriate books with simple story lines and bright, colorful illustrations. Read the book "Little Bear Makes a Scarecrow" by Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrated by David T. Wenzel. In the book, Little Bear's scarecrow blows over, so he decides to dress as a scarecrow himself. Other toddler scarecrow-themed books include "The Scarecrow's Hat" by Ken Brown and "The Little Scarecrow Boy" by Margaret Wise Brown. Enhance the reading of the story by engaging children in creating their own illustration for the text.
- Other scarecrow activities include dressing toddlers up as scarecrows. Dress a toddler in oversized clothes and stuff cotton batting and raffia into the shirt. Use denim overalls and work boots in the costume. Top off the costume with a wicker hat and use face paint to complete the outfit.
Create a treat sack out to look like a scarecrow hat and fill it with treats for a toddler. Draw a scarecrow face on a brown paper bag. Use construction paper to create a hat. Fill the bag with scarecrow stickers and sugar cookies decorated to look like scarecrows.
