Doomsday - Doomsday Review

Alumni from some of Chicago’s most illustrious death and black metal bands gather for a new project, Doomsday, with the release of their debut self titled EP. Composed of members, both former and current, of bands such as Nachtmystium, Bones, and Usurper amongst others, Doomsday also sport Goatwhore drummer Zack Simmons and bassist Bob Fouts of The Gates Of Slumber in their lineup. If this doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will.

This six-song affair is obviously just a warm up for further installments as Doomsday are just cranking out some quick blasts that nicely combine old school Swedish death metal with more than just a hint of crust.

Five of the songs on the EP are originals treading heavily in a very thick sound (mastermind Sanford Parker has a hand in twiddling the knobs) with big, lumbering riffs, a mid-paced gallop that segues between a d-beat and a blast, and hoary growls from vocalist Zion Meagher.

The songwriting is good, the musicianship is more than adequate, and Doomsday are heavier than the weight of a collapsing building. Toss in a killer cover of GG Allin’s classic “I Kill Everything That I F--k,” and you know that Doomsday are just getting started. What more could you ask for?
