Stop Puppy Biting - Harvey Parker

Yes, puppies are cute. Their biting can seem playful at first, but if it isn't stopped early on, it can be a big problem later on in life.

If the puppy is kept with its mother for at least 8 weeks, it will have learned not to bite. Most puppies are taken away from their mothers before the eight weeks are up.

The Early Days

Try to start with your puppy as soon as possible, whether they are too young to know better or just never learned.

The most important thing is to never hit your puppy. It can lead to very aggressive behavior in the future.

Try not to confuse your puppy. Always praise good and bad behaviors immediately. Avoid games like tug of war.

Consistency is the key. Don't let him get away with anything, "Just this once." If you repeat the same procedure over and over again, the puppy will stop showing bad behaviour.

The Training

Try obedience classes at first. There are even some classes that work specifically on biting.

When your puppy bites you, give him a toy instead of your finger.

Sometimes the puppy doesn't understand that it hurts you. Give a light yelp or cry that lets him know he is hurting you.

By 10 weeks old, puppies should understand that biting is not ok.
