Royal Caribbean Cruise Tips

    Before You Go

    • Depending on the itinerary, passengers may need a passport to board the ship. On average, it takes up to six weeks to receive a new passport, so plan ahead.

Staterooms on cruise ships are not spacious. Pack only what is needed, and if possible, re-wear some clothing. Pack in similar colors to minimize the number of shoes and accessories.

If you must fly to the port, do so a day in advance. This allows for more time to make alternate plans if nasty weather or unexpected delays occur with your flight.

    Onboard

    • Royal Caribbean has a strict alcohol policy that prohibits passengers from bringing alcohol onboard. If passengers violate the policy, they may not be allowed on the cruise ship.

During the boarding process, each passenger is issued a stateroom key, known as a SeaPass card. This card also works as a type of onboard credit card. Cash is not accepted on Royal Caribbean cruise ships. When shopping or paying for cocktails onboard, present the SeaPass card for payment. The SeaPass card is also used as a boarding pass to disembark and embark at the various ports.

Seasickness can be bothersome for some cruisers. Doctors sometimes prescribe patches worn behind a passenger's ear. Travelers also use over-the-counter remedies including Dramamine or Sea-Band wristbands. Both can be found at most drug stores. If you are concerned about seasickness, staff recommend reserving a stateroom in the middle of the ship on the lowest level, as this is where the ship is most stable.

Royal Caribbean ships feature a wide variety of restaurants, bars, pools and common areas. A list of onboard activities planned by the crew can be found in a Daily Planner, which is left in each stateroom.

    In Port

    • Cruise lines offer shore excursions to best reflect each port's unique offerings. Royal Caribbean suggests booking excursions in advance, as some have limited capacity and sell out. Passengers can also book once on the ship.

    End of the Trip

    • Royal Caribbean passengers should refer to the company's gratuity guidelines when it comes to tipping employees. The guidelines include a total of four employees and apply to passengers of all ages. The recommended amount is per passenger, per day. Passengers are also encouraged to add an additional tip for those employees who provided outstanding service. Tips either are added to the SeaPass card or may be paid in cash.

    Watch Out

    • There are a number of surprising costs associated with cruising. Cocktails and trips to the casino are not included. Shore excursions, spa treatments and tipping are also additional costs. If you prefer to track your charges as you go, routinely check your SeaPass card at the Guest Relations desk throughout the voyage.
