Old people tend to take naps during the day because they doze off far more easily. Because of the naps, it then becomes harder to get to sleep at night. Secondly, medicines can affect sleep. The pills that you are taking could be the source of your insomnia. You should make it a point to talk to your doctor if you suspect that your pills is the culprit. Medicines for depression, pain and flu are some of the pills that can cause sleepless nights.

Thirdly, a feeling of anxiety can affect your sleep. Being anxious means that your body and mind are unable to keep calm and with that sleep becomes a problem. Your mind is always wandering and your energy levels are constantly on high when you are stressed up and anxious. If this is the how you are feeling, you must learn to have peace of mind. Meditation and yoga are some of the practices you can take up to help yourself relax.

Fourthly, your lifestyle could also be affecting your sleep quality. Are you having indigestion because of heavy meals late into the night? Do you have a lack of exercise? Are you relying on too much caffeine during the day? All of these unhealthy habits and more can add up to make you stay awake at night. A lot of times, it is a combination of factors that lead people to have insomnia and poor health overall.

The above are just a few common reasons for a lack of sleep. There are many other causes and to tackle insomnia, you would need to find out what exactly is causing you to lose sleep in the first place. Consult a doctor for proper evaluation if your condition remains unchanged after two weeks. Bear in mind that prolonged periods of lack of sleep can lead to other health issues in the long run, so proper treatment is recommended.
