Studies were made on antidepressants such as Zoloft which prompted the FDA to release a special warning on the drug classification. According to the article published on the March issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, the use of antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal ideations among children and young adolescents. No accounts of suicide attempts were recorded but the increase in suicide ideations were greatly observed. This result however is highly controversial in the medical community as some would continually refute the findings. Although the FDA required warnings on antidepressant labelling with regard to children and young adolescent use, the agency doesnt forbid doctors to use it in pediatric patients. It is not advised to immediately stop the use of the drug as severe complications such as an SSRI Discontinuation Syndrome may take place.

Suicide Ideations

Suicidal ideation is defined as wanting to take ones life. Plainly, it means that you are thinking of dying by doing it yourself. Although this doesnt include committing suicide per se, it is generally used as a term to pertain on the intent of committing suicide including the act on how to do it. This is often a sign of major depression and/or bipolar disorder. One should not ignore any individual who expresses a wish to die.

Suicidal ideations can be grouped into two and they are as follow:
Active
This is serious because there is a current and active plan on committing suicide.
Passive
The individual has expressed the desire to commit suicide but no plan has been made.
Suicidal ideations can be the persons way in seeking help. If you know an individual with suicidal ideations, it would be ideal to take him/her to medical professionals who can help provided if you dont know how to deal with the given situation. By not ignoring a person with suicidal ideations; you might have prevented a suicide attempt from happening.

How to Manage Suicide Ideations

Home treatment is not advised for people with major disorder or any other type of mental disorder. If the case is severe, admission to a medical facility is necessary and generally, antidepressants like Zoloft is given. Your physician will however weigh down the pros and cons of the medication according to your condition because side effects such as Zoloft birth defects can affect pregnant women and those of childbearing age. Also, since Zoloft may increase suicide ideations in pediatric patients, an alternative medication may be given.
