Angela Thompsell is a teacher and scholar who specializes in the history of British imperialism in Africa. When she is not writing for About.com, Angela is an Assistant Professor of British and African History at The College at Brockport, State University of New York.

Experience

For the past five years, Angela has taught courses in African, British, and World history at The College at Brockport.  She is currently writing a book, Hunting Africa, that focuses on British big game hunting in Africa at the turn of the twentieth-century, when Europe was conquering much of Africa. She is particularly interested in the interactions and encounters between hunters and African people, including those they hired as guides and trackers, and the growing participation of women hunters after 1900.

Education

Angela double majored at the University of Florida, graduating with a BA in History and a BS in Zoology.  She earned her MA and PhD in History from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2009.

My goal in writing for About.com is to provide open access to trustworthy information on African history.  I love teaching, and I want to make a part of what I do in the classroom available to anyone. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of misperceptions about Africa, and I hope to combat some of these by educating people about the rich and complex history of this incredibly diverse continent.
