How to Use a 1928 Prayer Book

    Choosing the 1928 version

    • 1). Learn the significance of different versions of the U.S. Book of Common Prayer.

There are four versions in total; 1789, 1892, 1928 and the current one, revised in 1979. The Society of Archbishop Justus, at justus.anglican.org , explains the main differences and revisions and reproduces some of the texts on-line. All versions include orders of service and texts for the Episcopalian Church, but only the 1928 and 1979 versions are now available for use.

    • 2). Talk to members of the Episcopalian Church who promote the use of the 1928 BCP.

The 1928 versus the 1979 version debate is ongoing and divides the followers. Episcopalians for Traditional Faith, etf1928.org, is a lobby group devoted to preserving the use of the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. Not only does the website give clear arguments against modernizing the BCP, the discussion forum will connect you with people you can talk to directly.

    • 3). Contact people who favor the sole use of the current Book of Common Prayer, revised in 1979.

The House of Bishops, a governing authority in the Episcopalian church, has, according to the EFT, discouraged the use of the 1928 BCP since 1979. They've failed to ban it but have ruled that any church using it must do so alongside the current version. Pro-1979 followers prefer its modernized language and overall return to ancient Christian tradition. The Society of Archbishop Justus has useful information and contacts at justus.anglican.org.

Consult The Foundation for Religion Online, www.religiousresourcesonline.org, for a comprehensive explanation of this side of the argument.

    • 4). Go to church services offering both Books of Common Prayer.

You can get a list of churches near you from Episcopalians for Traditional Faith, .eft1928.org; Anglicans Online, anglicansonline.org; and the Episcopal Church, episcopalchurch.org.
