Pick a Room

• Choose one room to begin restoring order in the home. It might be the most clutter-filled room or you might want an easier task to start with.The approach is your choice. Whichever room you choose, allow 30 minutes to work on the clutter.
  
  Assemble three boxes or bins. One will be for trash, one to relocate the items elsewhere in the home and the other for giveaway items. Place any clutter item into one of the three boxes. Anything in the room that lacks a specific "home," either when it's put away or sitting out where it belongs, should go into one of the three boxes. Work steadily until every clutter item in the room is either in its place or in a box.
  
  

Work Through the Home

• Follow this approach as you work your way through each room, as you have time and as you feel motivated. By tackling one room at a time, the task does not seem as overwhelming and huge. To avoid burnout, do not attempt to do more than is reasonable in one day.
  
  

Sort the Boxes

• Once the sorting boxes begin to fill up, go through the items. Anything in the throwaway box should simply be disposed of without spending more time on them. The giveaway box should be placed in your vehicle, where it can be taken to a donation center when it is convenient. The box with items to keep needs to be sorted. Spend a short time removing items that can easily be put away. Figure out storage solutions for any important items that remain in the box. If items remain in the box that you cannot easily store, consider storing the entire box for several months, then reassessing the contents anew. You may be able to part with many of these items after some time has passed.
  
  

Daily Maintenance

• Once the house is decluttered, daily maintenance is the key to success. Go through each room at day's end with a large laundry basket. Misplaced items go into the basket to be put away immediately. Maintaining rooms this way on a daily basis can keep clutter controlled effectively.
