    Peanut Butter

    • Birds that like nuts will also enjoy nut butters, especially in winter when calories may be more difficult to come by. Cover pine cones in peanut butter, then roll them in birdseed. More than the wrens will thank you by gathering to feed.

    Nuts and Seeds

    • Peanuts and sunflower seeds appeal to large birds, such as the blue jay, and smaller birds, such as the titmouse and the chickadee. Sunflower seeds will invite the greatest range of birds, as woodpeckers, finches and mockingbirds also enjoy the seed.

    Breadcrumbs

    • Crumble bread, or serve it in whole chunks or slices to appeal to birds both large (pigeons and doves) and small (creepers and nuthatches). Caution: Owls and raptors may be attracted by the variety of tiny birds looking for bread to eat.

    Fruit

    • Feed orioles orange slices; the birds are attracted by the color. Attract songbirds, such as warblers, and game birds, such as quail, with berries and raisins.

    Sugar

    • Please many brilliantly colored birds with sugar water (with or without coloring), and enjoy the presence of hummingbirds, tanagers, orioles and woodpeckers. Offer separate feeders for specific bird species to increase your odds of attracting them.
