    • Fleetwood RVs got their start in Orange County, California. Fleetwood later moved its manufacturing to the city of Riverside, east of Los Angeles, in 1963. The parent company, Fleetwood Enterprises, which also manufactured homes, came to a sad end, filing for bankruptcy in 2009, selling its name and RV division to a New York-based firm that moved operations to Indiana. The 2011 Fleetwood Discovery 40G and 40X share most characteristics, differing slightly in their floor plans and minor components.

    Chassis

    • The Discovery 40 sits on a 276-inch wheelbase and has an overall length of 41 feet, 7 1/2 inches. The RV is 12 feet, 10 inches high and 102 inches wide at is maximum. The interior height is 84 inches and width 96 inches. The freshwater holding tank's capacity is 100 gallons, the gray water tank holds 75 gallons and the black-water tank has a capacity of 50 gallons. The water-heater tank can hold 10 gallons and the appliance propane tank's capacity is 38.7 gallons. The fuel tank holds 100 gallons, with fuel fill access on both sides.

    Engine

    • Powering the RV is a 380-horsepower, 8.3-liter Cummins diesel engine. The 24-valve, centered fuel-injected engine is rated at 1,050 ft.-lbs. of torque. The engine is married to an Allison 3,000 MH six-speed transmission and features a 160-amp alternator.

    Exterior

    • Four-point automatic levelers keep the Discovery on an even keel, while awning rails on both sides accommodate the Fleetwood "Weather Pro Power Awnings" to provide shade and shelter from the rain. The RV also comes standard with a patio awning for the door-side patio receptacle. Dual-pane windows with screens let in light, and the auto-locating satellite dish finds TV signals. The exterior entertainment center features a 32-inch LCD HDTV and splash proof AM/FM/DVD sound system. A heat pump is affixed to the bedroom air conditioning.

    Interior

    • The Discovery 40G is equipped with 20,000 and 25,000 BTU furnaces, while the 40X's furnaces are rated at 20,000 and 30,000 BTUs. Dual, roof-mounted air conditioning with a solar panel helps cool the inside, and a central vacuum system helps keep it clean. Other amenities include a stackable washer and dryer combo, water pump with filter and hardwood cabinet doors.

    Bathroom and Galley

    • The bathroom of the Discovery 40 features a glass shower with skylight, porcelain toilet with water saver and power roof vent. In the 40X galley is a three-burner cook top, while the 40G has a three-burner range. The four-door refrigerator has an ice-maker and water dispenser and affords 12.2 cubic feet of storage. A microwave oven rounds out the galley's features.

    Living Room and Bedroom

    • A Sony home theater system with AM/FM/DVD and surround-sound speakers is a centerpiece of the living room, which also contains a 32-inch HDTV -- 40 inches in the 40X. Optional features on the 40G include a desk and a vanity. On both 40G and 40X models, buyers can order up optional HDTVs in the front overhead. The bedroom features wall-to-wall carpeting, a remote start for the 8.0 KW Onan diesel generator, 22-inch TV and cedar-lined closet. The Discovery's safety systems include detector/alarms for both smoke and propane.
