Ford Mustang Sales Up in July
Ford Motor Company recently released their sales figures for the month of July. In a bit of good news, the company reports sales of the Ford Mustang were up more than 13 percent. In all, the company reported selling 6,564 Mustangs in July. One year earlier, in July of 2013, the company sold 5,768 Mustangs. That’s a year-over-year increase of 13.8 percent.
In the last seven months Ford has sold 50,795 Mustangs.
Last year at that time the company had sold 48,879.
The overall yearly sales increase, however small it might be, is a good sign that, while the latest generation Mustang has yet to hit dealer lots (it will become available this Fall), buyers are still seeking out Mustangs in greater numbers than last year.
Why buy a 2014 model year Mustang now when you can have a new generation Mustang in a few months? Some readers have told me they’re looking to get in on the 2014 Mustang before it goes away, hence their interest in the current model year. Others have said their incentive to shop for a new Mustang is good deals. They hope they’ll find good deals on the 2014 models now that the 2015 Mustang has been revealed. Whatever the case may be, Mustang sales are on the upswing; a good sign for Ford.
Camaro Remains Top Dog
Although the Mustang posted sales gains last month, Chevrolet’s Camaro remained the king of pony car sales. General Motors reports having sold 9,961 Camaros in July. That was a 12 percent increase over the number they sold in July of 2013.
As for the year, Chevrolet had sold 56,633 Camaros in the past seven months. That’s close to 6,000 more Camaros sold than Mustangs.
“GM and the U.S. economy left July carrying good momentum,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “The economy has bounced back strongly from the harsh winter, consumer confidence has reached a post-recession high, energy prices remain moderate and job growth continues. The stage is set for strong sales through the balance of the year.
All-in-all, the numbers aren’t that far off. We’ll have to see where the sales figures net out when the 2015 Mustang hits dealer lots.
The Mighty Challenger Continues On
Then there’s the Challenger. According to Dodge, the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Compass, Dodge Dart, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Journey and Ram Cargo Van each recorded their best July sales ever. “Chrysler Group had a solid July as each brand recorded sales gains on our way to a 20 percent year-over-year increase, our strongest July sales in nine years,” said Reid Bigland, Head of U.S. Sales. “
In all, sales of the Dodge Challenger muscle car were up 1 percent, its best sales ever in the month of July. Dodge reported having sold 4,294 of the cars last month. In July of 2013 the company sold 4,271. In looking at the year as a whole, Dodge has sold 30,575 Challengers, an 11 percent decrease in the 34,253 they had sold last year at this time.
Who knows? Maybe the new 2015 redesign will strike up some sales for the company. Then there’s the Challenger SRT Hellcat. It’s sure to “shake” things up a bit. In fact, we recently had a chance to take the latest Challenger out for a ride. Our thoughts? “The Hellcat goes about five time zones past insane, blowing past crazy, stupid and mind-bending along the way. I don't think humankind has yet invented a word that can describe the Hellcat, and if we ever do, I'm pretty sure it will have to include the F-bomb as its preceding modifier.” You can read the full review here.
