How to Get a B1 Visa
- 1). Complete and submit Form DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application. You must complete the application online and submit it electronically to the Department of State's website. You may print a copy of the entire application, but it is only necessary to print the page containing the bar code. This is the confirmation page.
- 2). Along with your application, upload a digital image of yourself. The photograph must be in color with a white or off-white background, must be current (taken within the last six months) and must show a full view of your face. You must have a neutral expression on your face and your eyes must be open. Mobile photos, a scanned copy of your driver's license and a full-length photograph of yourself do not comply with the requirements.
- 3). Submit additional country-specific documentation. Determine whether you will need to submit other documentation by visiting the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website at http://www.usembassy.gov/. Documentation may include evidence that supports the purpose of your trip and other documentation that establishes your economic and familial obligations.
- 4). Pay the fee. As of 2011, the fee is $140. Make sure you print out a receipt because you will need to provide proof at the interview. You may also need to pay a visa issuance fee, depending on the country you are from, the type of visa and the number of authorized applications and entries.
- 5). Schedule an interview. You can schedule an interview date by visiting the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website for the country you live in.
- 6). Attend the interview. Your interview will be held at a U.S. embassy or consulate office in your country. Bring the confirmation page that shows the bar code, the fee receipt and your passport.
