The Updated Princess Bride Style

In weddings, as with anything else, styles come and go in and out of fashion. With the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton coming up this spring, everyone has princess brides on their minds. The "princess bride" style has waned in recent years, but now it is ripe for a revival - with a new twist of course. Check out the updated princess style which is coming into vogue.

The difference between this season's version of the princess bride and what we have seen in years past can be summed up in one word: sophistication. The contemporary royal gowns and accessories are more streamlined and less poufy and exaggerated than the old style. This makes the style appropriate for brides of all ages, not just 22 year old ingenues. What remains the same is a love of luxurious fabrics like silk satin, rich embellishments like silver embroidery, and sparkling accessories like crystal bridal jewelry and petite tiaras.

The ideal updated princess bridal gown is created from shimmering silk satin. Nothing can surpass satin for regal elegance. Strapless wedding gowns remain popular, but also consider a graceful tip of the shoulder style or one with a jeweled illusion neckline. Real-life royal bride Kate Middleton is not expected to wear strapless, after all, it being a bit too bare for a grand royal wedding. The biggest difference in the newest royal-inspired wedding gowns is that the skirts are much slimmer than we have seen in the past. They are modeled after a contemporary princess bride, not Cinderella. A fit and flare skirt or a slim A-line paired with an ornately embellished bodice would strike the perfect note.

Speaking of embellishments, no royal style wedding gown would be complete without ornate details. Rich metallic embroidery in a dramatic pattern is a great place to start. Layer on twinkling Swarovski crystals, tiny mirror backed crystals, and even little sequins (yes, sequins are back!) for the perfect amount of sparkle when you walk down the aisle. The more slender skirts may be unadorned, but some of the most fabulous ones are those with interesting draping on a slim silhouette.

Every bride needs the right accessories to complete her wedding day ensemble. For an updated princess bride, a petite tiara is just the accent she needs. After a couple of years of headbands and feathers, the traditional bridal tiara is ripe for revival. To keep the look modern, choose a very dainty tiara worn with the hair mostly down. Add a long veil with a lightly beaded edge to complement the details on the bridal gown. Last but not least is the crystal wedding jewelry. Classic crystal and pearl drop earrings with a coordinating pendant necklace will look fabulous with a modern princess gown. For more drama, opt for a pair of crystal chandelier earrings. Always keep the necklace delicate when wearing a tiara.

For those brides who are in love with the classic elegance of a royal wedding, the newly updated princess look would be fantastic. It is polished, timeless, and grand - all wonderful things for a wedding. With a real royal wedding in the air, it is a safe bet that the contemporary princess bridal gown is going to be a trend with staying power.
