How to Become a General Adjuster
- 1). Graduate with a high school diploma or GED. This is the minimum educational requirement to become a general adjuster and is the prerequisite to gain licensure. While in school, you should focus on courses involving mathematics, English and communications.
- 2). Enroll in a degree program at a college or university. While having a postsecondary degree is not required for licensure, many employers prefer that applicants have an associate's or Bachelor's degree. Prospective adjusters can focus on a wide variety of degree programs, including business, architecture, automotive technology and criminal justice.
- 3). Earn licensure as a general adjuster. Requirements vary by state, but many states require you to pass a licensing exam. States may also offer courses and online training that can help you prepare for the exam. Some states, including Florida, allow you to complete workshops that make you exempt from the exam.
- 4). Obtain on-the-job training from an employer. Most employers require you to work under the supervision of a current general adjuster. This is an opportunity for you to learn how the company processes and investigates insurance claims. As you begin to gain more experience, you are given more responsibilities. The employer decides when you are ready to work on your own.
- 5). Participate in continuing education courses. In order to maintain your licensure and work as a general adjuster, you need to complete workshops and classes to learn about industry changes and new laws and regulations.
