Before the 1900s, 90 percent of Americans heated their homes with wood. As fossil fuels grew more accessible and popular, the number of wood-heated homes fell to only 1 percent by 1970, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Wood heating is regaining popularity, but this time the focus is on pellet stoves. Pellets are made from materials such as sawdust, bark and wood chips.
