- 1). Determine whether you meet the minimum requirements to become a bounty hunter. According to the Title 27 of the Indiana Code, recovery agents must be at least 18 years old, a state resident and a U.S. citizen. Applicants must not have had a misdemeanor conviction in the previous five years or a felony conviction in the previous 10 years.
- 2). Complete the continuing education requirement. Indiana law requires bounty hunters to complete a minimum of 12 hours of classroom instruction through an approved provider. The purpose of the pre-licensing education is to familiarize you with state laws regarding the duties and responsibilities of bail and recovery agents, and the limitations on what actions bounty hunters may engage in when apprehending a defendant.
- 3). Obtain a recovery agent application from the Indiana Department of Insurance. You must provide the DOI with your name, address, phone number, eye color, hair color, height, weight, date of birth, Social Security number and a recent full face photograph. You must also answer a series of brief questions concerning your prior criminal history and previous experience working in the bail bonding industry.
- 4). Contact the Evansville Police Department to obtain a certified fingerprint card. You must provide the fingerprint card when submitting your application for a recovery agent license. You must also contact the Indiana State Police in order to obtain a complete criminal background check.
- 5). Return your completed application to the Department of Insurance, along with the appropriate license and examination fees. As of 2011, the license fee was $300 and the examination fee was $100. When you return the application, you must register through the Department of Insurance website to take the recovery agent examination.
- 6). Take the licensing examination on the date provided by the Department of Insurance. You must bring your state-issued driver's license or a federal ID card as well as a copy of your prelicensing education certification. If you successfully pass the examination, you will be issued a recovery agent license
- 7). Contact the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's and the Evansville Police Department office upon receipt of your recovery agent license. Indiana law requires all licensed bounty hunters to notify local law enforcement that they are working in the area.
