How to Refinish Stained Oak Flooring
- 1). Sand the perimeter of the room with the orbital sander, using the coarse-grit sandpaper. Sand the center of the room with the floor sander, again using coarse-grit sandpaper. Vacuum up all debris.
- 2). Repeat Step 1, using fine-grit sandpaper instead of the coarse-grit. Vacuum the floor again.
- 3). Apply the varnish or polyurethane finish to the floor with the floor applicator. You'll be able to paint several floorboards at once. Move horizontally, applying the varnish to boards in parallel lines. Let the varnish or polyurethane finish dry completely.
- 4). Apply a second coat of varnish or polyurethane. Wait until the second coat dries completely before you walk on the floor.
