How to Prevent Backflow From a Yard Hydrant

    No Hose

    • If possible, disconnect the hose if there's one attached to your yard hydrant and fill the container straight from the spout. The separation between the spout and the container prevents backflow.

    Air Gap

    • If you need to use a hose to get the water to the container, never put the hose into the container and let the water flow in at the bottom. Always maintain an air space between the end of the hose and the surface of the water in the container.

    Special Equipment

    • If you frequently mix toxic chemicals from a particular yard hydrant, you can prevent backflow by installing a backflow prevention valve on the hydrant.
