Kate Hudson Talks About "Alex and Emma"

From all appearances, it looks like Kate Hudson may be the next 'Queen of Romantic Comedies,' taking over for Sandra Bullock, Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts.

In writer/director Rob Reiner's "Alex and Emma," Hudson stars as Emma Dinsmore, a stenographer hired to help Alex (Luke Wilson), a blocked writer, finish his novel before Cuban loan sharks take him for a long walk off a short pier. It becomes a matter of life imitating art as Alex and Emma, two opposites, find themselves very much attracted to one another over the course of working on Alex's romance novel.

On casting his two romantic leads, Rob Reiner notes, "Kate is incredibly versatile, funny and attractive, and Luke is charming, sexy and a little bit rough hewn - they complement each other perfectly."

You get to play a variety of characters in this movie. Was that fun?
It was fun for me. When I first read the script, it was actually years and years ago, and I really loved it. But at the time, it wasn't the same character who played the other characters. They changed that, and then that's when I kind of went, ?That's really fun.? How many times do you get to play five different characters in one movie and have Rob Reiner direct it? I jumped at that opportunity and it was really so much fun for me. To go from character to character, you totally lose yourself in it. I lost myself every time that I was Elsa. I just loved the German so much, I really did. It was like I could do a whole movie as Elsa, I just had so much fun. I have a whole story of where she comes from, everything about her, her relationships, and the whole thing.

That's how much fun I had playing these characters.

What attracted you to ?Alex and Emma??
I think that it's different. I think that when I saw this movie - I always have a hard time watching the movie the first time, no matter what - and I walked out and said, ?I've never seen anything like that.? You don't get to see this kind of romantic comedy love story anymore. They're funny and they're smart. There's a lot of dialogue and you have to listen. [There are romantic comedies that are] goofy, which is fine, too. I was just in one of those, too, the goofy [kind where it?s] like, ?Lets be crazy and wild,? and everyone has to make funny faces instead of just being a real smart comedy and a love story.

Did you know Luke Wilson before filming ?Alex and Emma??
We've known each other for a long time and so it was great; we've always wanted to work with each other. He was like a brother to me from the second that I met him. We totally responded to each other. He drove me nuts, he made me laugh, he made me crazy, and it was just totally like a brother. We were always like, ?We should work together one day. It'd be so much fun for us.? And finally it happened. He was one of my first friends as far as like an actor or someone in your group of peers.
