How to Relieve Constipation in a Newborn Puppy
- 1). Give the puppy plenty of water. Water intake, coupled with exercise, can promote regular bowel movements. Generally a puppy should drink 1 ounce of water for each pound of body weight. Increase this amount on hot days.
- 2). Massage your puppy's tummy to stimulate a bowel movement. Lay your puppy on its side, take a warm, moist washcloth and apply gentle pressure to its stomach while stroking in a downward direction toward its anus.
- 3). Add fiber to your puppy's diet. Canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) and green beans are loaded with fiber. Mix 1 to 2 teaspoons of canned pumpkin or green beans with your puppy's food until its bowel movements are regular again.
- 4). Give the puppy a small bowl of milk. This may cause the stool to be runny initially, but it will solve the constipation problem.
