How to Prevent a Tiered Cake From Collapsing in

    • 1). Bake and frost your tiers as you see fit. Chill them before stacking, since it is easier to work with a chilled cake and frosting.

    • 2). Set the largest tier on your cake drum or other strong base. Use a cardboard cutout that is the same size as the second tier and use the toothpick or knife to score that shape into the first tier.

    • 3). Insert a dowel rod into the bottom tier and mark the point where the rod is even with the top of the cake. Cut the rod at this mark and then use it as a guide to cut more rods. Use four plastic dowels or six wooden ones. Insert the rods into the lower tier, within the circumference of the second tier.

    • 4). Follow the same process with each tier you plan to add. Once completed, take one more dowel rod and sharpen one end. Use a hammer to gently tap the rod through the center of the cake through all the layers. Once it reaches the base, cut just a little below the top of the cake and fill the hole with your preferred icing.
