Spotlight On An Indie Author: A Closer Look At Sara York and the MM Genre
Sara York, author of Pray The Gay Away, hadn't always wanted to be a writer, but books were her escape when she was a kid because she read all the time. When she would lie down at night, she would make up alternate endings for the books she read, changing the scenes to fit what she thought should have happened. It took her a while to realize she could write a book. And it took a long time to learn how to write. Glad she never gave up, it's been almost thirteen years since she first started writing. Although her first book was awful, it was a necessary step in the process.
Now Sara writes in almost every genre. However, she focuses mainly on MM contemporary. She does love thrillers and mysteries as she's published a few. But she loves writing about men. Being able to write two male characters in her stories is awesome. The challenge of writing MM drew her to the genre. She thinks the challenge is also why she likes writing thrillers because you have to have the twists and turns in there, including difficulties that go above and beyond the standard issues that cause problems. The thrill of writing keeps her coming back. It's exciting to write both MM and thrillers.
Currently Sara usually reads MM contemporary or suspense. She reads a few favorite authors and buys everything they put out. Those authors usually keep her very busy. She really enjoys writing and has a little over 60 works out. Not all are novels; some are novellas or parts of anthologies. Her most recent book is Pray The Gay Away. It's the first book in A Southern Thing series. The other two books will be released soon. Sending Jack Off to Jesus is coming out March 25, 2014, and My Big Fat Southern Gay Wedding is out April 1, 2014.
Here is the blurb for Pray The Gay Away: Star football player, Jack Miller, had it all. The perfect family, looks, girls hanging on his every word, and the respect of most people in his town. But one thing was missing--a man to be his own.
When Andrew Collins showed up in small town, conservative Sweet, Georgia, he looked more scrawny mutt than high school senior. Andrew's plan was to keep his head down and graduate high school, leaving his family behind to start his real life.
When he meets Andrew, Jack thinks he's found heaven, but reality holds him in check until one night when his lips gently slide across Andrew's, and fireworks go off.
As lust and something a little deeper brings them together, compelling them to take chances, people start to notice. Then the unthinkable happens, and Jack's parents find out he likes guys. The battle lines are drawn and they vow to pray the gay away.
Currently, Sara is working on the third book in the Colorado Heart Series. Colorado Wild is the first book in the series. She loves learning new characters and figuring out some of the cool things they want or need.
There are a couple of authors who are Sara's favorites. Kindle Alexander is tops in the current author category. She loves Ethan Stone's books, and everything he writes is on auto buy, same with Janet Evanovich. Those are her favorites because each one of them creates characters she loves. In fact, Kindle's character, Colt, from Double Full heavily influenced her development of Jack in Pray The Gay Away. Sara loves entertaining her readers. Some of her books are serious, but most are fun, lighthearted reads that she hopes brings joy.
Finally, Sara loves how helpful and approachable the authors are in the MM genre. €We're not a big genre, but there are a lot of great authors who are willing to help. If you run in to me at a conference or signing, (I'll be at TNEE in Atlanta on March 29th) please come say hi! I'd love to meet you. If you visit http://www.SaraYork.com you will find most of my books with links.€
