The Basic Secrets of Meditation

Whether you're planning to learn meditation with a mystic in the Himalayas or with your friendly neighborhood psychiatrist, the basic secrets of meditation are the same.
Meditation must be regular: All meditation exercises that you learn must be performed regularly and preferably at the same place and time every day.
From intricate breathing exercises to simply relaxing with meditation music, it is only the regularity of the sessions that will benefit you.
On and off sessions will only be a waste of time.
Private activity: Whether meditation is performed as a religious or personality development exercise, it is essentially a personal and private activity.
Discussing it across a cup of coffee at a party will not help you but rather interfere with your progress.
Of course, you will need to discuss some things with your teacher and maybe, with fellow learners, but on the whole, meditation is inherently an internal and individual process.
You will find your path within on your own even if you do not believe in the religious or mystical part of meditation.
Learning to handle your mind and ego is a solitary process that you may ruin by extensive discussions.
Breathing patterns: Most meditation techniques are based on using the breath to center your attention.
The secret lies in practicing the technique without becoming too focused on the breath.
The breath is to serve as a vehicle for your attention and the focus ultimately is to be your own subconscious or the mantra and technique your teacher has taught you.
Most often, practitioners of all levels get too lost in controlling the breath.
Meditation is not a breath-control exercise.
Physical fitness: No matter what level of meditation you intend to take up whether for daily harmony in your moods or for manifesting abundance, if you are not physically fit, the utility of your attention will diminish.
A fit body harbors a powerful find through which attention can be used as a laser beam to help you gain the maximum benefit from meditation.
If taking up meditation, take up yoga and exercising as well.
