How to Keep Hot Tubs In Good Repair

Spa water is meant to hold hot temperatures and helps to relieve stress and muscle discomfort. With regular maintenance and proper use of chemicals, spas can last for years and rarely have malfunctioning issues. When they cease to sustain hot water temperatures as they should or they don't bubble and churn regularly, there could be a variety of causes.

The Basics
When owners discover a problem with their spas, it is important to first check the basics, such as whether the machine is plugged in and if it is receiving the appropriate amount of water. The owner can look for puddles and damp spots outside the basin, as well as underneath the cabinet. Checking fittings for leaks, cracks, corrosion and build-up of debris in the water is something that can be done before calling a professional. Also important is to verify proper use of chemicals to maximize cleanliness and efficient flow.

Heaters
There may come a time when the owner has the temperature set above 100 degrees F and climbs in to find it's actually lukewarm. In many cases when the water isn't hot while the machine is running, the culprits are hot tub heaters. This mechanism can be replaced, which is less expensive than replacing the spa itself.

Filters
Spa filters play an important role in the machine's health. Filters should be changed regularly so that they effectively remove debris in the water. When the filter becomes clogged, the water cannot circulate efficiently. This, in turn, puts a strain on the circulation pump and the heater, as well. Debris floating in the water that isn't removed is more likely to clog jets. Hot tub filters are easily replaced. Owners should follow manufacturer's instructions regarding the type of filtration system. For older models, some filter manufacturers make universal filters that fit several different manufacturers and models.

Pumps
One rare but noticeable issue is when the jets are working but the waterfall is not. The spa's recirculating pump could be the problem. The pump shaft may be frozen. For owners unfamiliar with how the unit works, it is advisable to call a professional to diagnose the problem. The hot tub replacement parts can then be ordered and installed. Reasons for malfunctioning spa pumps include corrosion, bad wires, burnt switches and cracked impellers. Another sign of failing spa circulation pumps is a noisy impeller or a humming sound. This could be caused by worn bearings in the pump or a bad capacitor.

Excess Heat
When a spa feels hotter than usual, it may be suffering from a malfunctioning thermostat. The thermostat measures the temperature and tells the machine when to stop getting hotter or when to turn back on and increase heat. The thermostat is easily replaced in most models.
