Want to visit the site of a world-record feat? Visit Lake Cumberland in southern Kentucky, where, according to lakecumberland.com, a Guinness record was set in the summer of 2010 when 1,651 boats were tied together. The lake is the largest by volume east of the Mississippi River. It is the vacation destination of many families, and water activities such as fishing, boating and water skiing are popular. For those who prefer to spend time on dry land, there are several suitable attractions. - Mammoth Cave National Park was established in 1941. It began as a preservation effort dedicated to the Nolin and Green river valleys, a portion of south central Kentucky hill country and the underlying cave system. According to the U.S. National Park Service, more than 367 miles of the cave have been explored, making it the longest known cave in the world. Several tours are available, including the 30-minute, self-guided Discovery Tour and the three-hour Violet City Lantern Tour.

The petting zoo is the place to visit and feed ducks, sheep, goats, donkeys, llamas and buffalo, as well as several exotic animals. A bear-shaped corn maze stretches over 4 acres and will test your sense of direction. Trails throughout the maze lead to the bear's "heart." Hayrides through the pumpkin patch provide guests a chance to pick their own pumpkins. The grounds include a picnic area and barn where handmade decorations, gourds and fall flowers are sold. Finish your visit with a tour of Old Home Place, a historic home that will give you a sample of life in Kentucky from more than 100 years ago.

The camp offers guided tours and includes a restaurant and lodging for overnight visitors. According to the National Park Service, the schoolhouse on the property once doubled as a church, a meeting hall and a place for socials. The Doctor's Office displays medicine bottles, an exam chair, a wooden wheelchair, photographs of doctors and various other pieces from the period. The reconstructed Bath House includes displays such as safety equipment, lamps and caps used by miners. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the menu includes breakfast items, burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, soups, salads, chicken dinners, fish dinners and homemade desserts.
