How to Make Fancy Christmas Napkins
- 1). Choose fabric in a holiday print or a solid color like red, burgundy, green or gold to match your holiday decor. Wash and iron the fabric before making the napkins.
- 2). Using tailor's chalk and a ruler, measure out a 19-by-19-inch square to create an 18-by-18-inch napkin. Cut out the square using shears or a rotary cutter and self-healing mat.
- 3). Fold over the edge 1/4-inch and iron it flat. Continue to fold and press each side 1/4-inch until you have finished all four sides.
- 4). Fold and press each side another 1/4-inch. By doing this, you will avoid a raw edge of fabric that will unravel.
- 5). Decide what color thread you want to use to sew the napkins. Choose a color that will either coordinate with your fabric or provide contrast.
- 6). Topstich along all four folded edges. To turn a corner, make sure the needle is inserted in the fabric. Then, lift the presser foot and gently turn the fabric, taking care to ensure a straight stitching line. Backstitch at the beginning and end so thread won't unravel.
- 7). If desired, add a decorative stitch to the napkin at this point. Many machines have decorative stitching options, or you can hand-stitch a design.
- 8). Iron the finished napkin. Repeat the process until you have made as many napkins as you want.
