How to Build Wood Porch Stairs

    • 1). Using the tape measure, record measurements to gauge the width of every step tread. The depth of each tread must be 12 inches. Also use the 4-foot square to determine how tall the stairway must rise up to the level of the porch. Determine the amount of step treads that are required. Carefully divide the rise against the exact number of step treads in order to find the height of the vertical support for treads.

    • 2). Prepare the stairway supports by connecting the stairway carefully to the porch. Position the riser’s height in Step 1 to the measuring square. Sketch the right number of risers and right-angled treads to a 2 by 12-inch board. Use the saw to cut the angles. Make sure you mind the drawing lines and stay within them. Create a single stringer for each 18” for the width of the stair. Cut off the ends of the first stringer with a handsaw. Make sure the stringers are identical. Be certain the stringer edges are identical to the width of the treads. Do the same for the riser’s thickness.

    • 3). Sever the risers and treads from the wood. Attach the stringers carefully to the porch frame. Drill the holes for the L-shaped brackets. Use 3-inch deck screws to fasten at the farthest right and left ends of the porch steps. Attach the stringer securely to the deck. Make sure to do this from the outward deck, and use the deck screws.

    • 4). Connect all of the risers. Use the 3-inch screws to fit the each of the risers vertically to the stringers. Screw the treads down with a single screw to the stringer. Also put a screw in the riser for every single stringer support.
