The Importance of Good Looks at a Job Interview

While all people are smart in different ways, the interview process is a place where everyone is limited on time and resources to impress the executives who sit across the table. If the interview process is to last a few weeks, undoubtedly the decision-makers will have time to reflect upon interviewees' technical and communication skills and draw conclusive analytical data. These last two are often referred to as hard and soft skills. Alas, the time slot alloted for the initial conversation with employers is limited and wrapped with with a thick layer of stress, anxiety and a good bit of competition who are just as motivated and prepared as everyone else.

Using the power of a well-tailor piece of clothing every candidate can gain extra confidence and initial points. A good looking professional suit will not get a job and do the talking, it is a great step in the right direction and quite useful when melting the ice often turning heads and getting nods of approval. What is more, some tailors are artists and can produce miracles with the right cloth, a pair of scissors and a sewing machine.

Suits typically fall in three categories:

  • standard, ready-made styles which are available at department or specialized stores. They are expected to fit right on and not made with modifications in mind

  • made-to-measure suits are designed to be altered and adjusted to the flavors and whims of each person individually. They are still pre-made in some industrial facility, often their ends, hems etc. are left open for corrections as needed

  • bespoke suits – this is where the craftsmanship of a skillful stylist can propel a job seeker forward. Bespoke suits are made from scratch and they are only designed to fit one person in particular. No conveyor belts or assembly lines. Naturally they provide the best fit and there should be no real man out there who has never had a real fitting.

The job interview process has become an increasingly complex and very competitive exercise. Often it is a place where people celebrate success or search for additional motivation to carry on depending on outcome. Having an appropriate and stylish suit sends a message of accomplishment and internal balance to the interviewers which is an important part of their decision forming arsenal.
