Ever since the beginning of riding, women riders have been among those that love the freedom and rush that riding brings.
Today women make up one third of the riding population, which means the markets for riders have targeted women by creating womens motorcycle jackets and other riding gear that is made just for them, motorcycle companies have motorcycles and will customize motorcycles for women, and so on.
Women riders express who they are by riding, their riding style, the motorcycle they choose to ride and the leather jacket and riding gear they choose to wear.
Today womens motorcycle jackets come in a variety of styles and colors or color combinations.
The jackets come with hardware that is silver, black, or brass, vents, side laces, zip out liners, fringe that is good for wicking rain from the jacket and so on.
When any rider chooses a jacket it is good to make sure it is cowhide or American buffalo which gives the best abrasion resistance, with 1.
3 mm thickness or more, and drum dyed leather instead of having the color sprayed on.
Drum dyed creates a beautiful piece of leather that is dyed all of the way through, whereas sprayed on dye can peel showing the lighter color that is underneath.
Womens jackets are made with women in mind, so they are made to fit women.
There are riding clubs and associations that are just for women.
The first and oldest continuously operated women's motorcycling organization is the Motor Maids.
Motor Maids was started by a famous early woman rider Dorothy (Dot) Robinson in 1940, which became a chartered member of the AMA (American Motorcycle Association) in 1941.
Women On Wheels (WOW) is one of the largest women's groups today.
It was founded in 1982 when it was not as common as it is today for women to ride, and provided an outlet for women riders to come together with other women riders.
Today there are WOW chapters all across the United States.
One, more specialized women's group is Ebony Queens Motorcycle Club.
There may be women's riding clubs that are locally formed also.
One of the best ways to find a club in your area is to contact the AMA and get a list of AMA-chartered clubs in your area.
It is a good idea for new riders to take riding lessons.
Even experienced riders can gain from taking a MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) RiderCourse.
The MFS is a nationwide not-for -profit organization established in March 1973 that works to make motorcycling a safer activity and has developed programs recognized around the world for their excellence and effectiveness.

Women have been riding as long as men, just not in the same numbers.
But today there are more women than ever that have taken to the open road to experience the freedom that comes from riding a motorcycle.
