Classic Motorcycle Workshop – Sand Blasters
A major part of classic motorcycle restoration is cleaning. Removing dirt, grime and rust from an old motorcycle is a time consuming dirty task. However, machines are available to greatly reduce the work involved and also enhance the appearance of many components.
One particular machine to help during the cleanup process is a bead blaster (often called a sand blaster). A number of different machines are available from bench top models to free standing cabinet types.
In addition to the different types of machines, there are also a number of different bead materials that can be blasted through the machine. Each bead type differs in its ability to remove deposits, and also with the finish it leaves behind.
Some of the better known bead materials are:
Glass
- Glass beads leaves a fine matte or satin finish, good for aluminum components such as cases, brake plates, hubs.
Silicon Carbide
- Good for rust and paint removal
Steel Grit
- Good for rust and paint removal, leaves a smooth finish
Crushed Walnut Shells
- Ideal for removing paint from delicate surfaces; leaves a very smooth finish.
Plastic Grit
- Good for paint removal from soft surfaces such as fiber-glass; produces little dust during blasting.
As with the different types of materials and machines, the price of the machines varies a lot too. When comparing the price of a bench top machine and a cabinet type, it is obvious that the container size makes a big difference. Whereas the bench-top machine is ideal for small components, a free standing cabinet type will be needed for large items such as a frame or a complete wheel.
