    Opening a P.O. Box

    • 1). Gather two forms of identification, such as a driver's license, or an official State ID card registered to you by the state you currently reside in. Other acceptable forms of identification when registering for a P.O. box include a passport, mortgage, deed of trust, vehicle insurance registration or an official registered voter's card.

    • 2). Print the official P.O. box application form -- PS FORM 1093 -- from the official USPS website to complete online or by hand before paying for your P.O. box subscription.

    • 3). Visit the official USPS website to begin opening your P.O. box online. Alternatively, you can also visit the nearest post office in person to complete the registration process.

    • 4). Enter your payment information, length of rental and any other details available to enter on the website. You can also complete the registration or payment of your P.O. box at your nearest post office. Submit your payment and credit card information online to confirm your purchase and rental.

    • 5). Visit the P.O. box you registered your box with to pick up your keys and to begin receiving mail.

    Open a Virtual Online Mailbox

    • 1). Determine the type of mailbox you wish to open. You will also need to decide on the "virtual" address of the commercial mailbox you are going to register to rent. Some virtual companies offer mailbox locations in desirable areas, such as NYC Virtual Office, who features available mailing addresses on 5th Avenue.

    • 2). Visit a well-known company that provides mailboxes and virtual mailing services online. Some companies include Regus, NYC Virtual Office and USA 2 ME. These websites offer mailing services for a monthly fee to keep your identity safe and to obtain a professional address for your business.

    • 3). Browse available addresses in the area you wish. You should also browse the company's package and pricing plans, as many of them forward the mail to your official address after receiving company letters. This may cost additional fees, so be sure to review multiple service packages before deciding on one virtual mailing company to go with.

    • 4). Enter any payment information that is necessary when registering and paying for your virtual mailbox from the company you choose. Enter the specific address -- if available -- or select from the website's choices. Once you submit your payment, you can then advertise your commercial mailbox address as the one you specifically chose and registered online.
