There are many things to consider when you own a pet bird, and keeping your bird safe and out of harms way should be at the top of your list.
Most birds are able to outlive their owners, but they are still fragile little creatures and need to be taken special care of.
You might have heard of an old story about miners taking canary birds down a coal mine and letting it breathe the air.
If the canary died, the air was toxic and they would move on to another mine.
This is because canary's (and birds in general) are extremely sensitive to the air.
Poor air quality will take a toll on your bird's health very quickly.
If you smoke cigarettes or cigars, you should always smoke outside so your pet bird doesn't smell it.
If you have a lot of candles or use Fabreeze-style air cleaners, don't use them around your bird.
Furniture polish is something you should avoid totally if you can, these fumes are also very deadly to your pet bird.
Birds love to chew on things they shouldn't chew on.
Some birds have gotten lead poisoning from chewing on welded objects for too long.
They also love eating plants, so make sure all the plants inside your home are not plastic, and non-toxic.
If your bird eats the wrong type of plant leaf, it could be lethal.
You could even buy a few plants like parsley and set them close to your bird's cage so if he's tempted to chew on anything, it will hopefully be those plants.
Feeding your bird human food is very good, it makes your bird a lot healthier, but there are some things you absolutely can't feed your new bird.
Chocolate is deadly to birds, just like it is to dogs.
Coffee is a stimulant and can also be deadly to your bird.
And never feed your bird avocado.
You might think your bird will enjoy the new Christmas tree you brought home, but many trees are finished with chemical preservatives and these chemicals can harm your bird if he chooses to fly by the Christmas tree.
Plus, all the lights are electric and if something goes wrong, it could shock and electrocute your bird.
Just be very cautions of everything you do in your house, because even something as simple as a Christmas tree can cause serious harm to your pet bird.
If you're not sure if something you're putting in the air will be safe for your bird, ask your local veterinarian.
