Save Money By Re-Evaluating Your Insurance Company

Since I've been retired from engineering, my wife and I are always looking for ways to save money, mainly because our retirement income now isn't quite the income we had when I worked.
One way we did save money was with home owner's insurance after I re-looked at my current coverage.
We live in an area of the country that is very prone to tornadoes, sometimes referred to as Tornado Alley, and in the past few years things have been pretty scary for homeowners here in Alabama and nearby states.
Each year the twisters skirt through our city and nearby towns and usually do significant property damage, with some deaths.
The home owner's insurance we until recently had was with a smaller regional company, and they were hit pretty hard with damage claims to replace roofs, personal belongings, and even complete houses.
As a result, my home owners insurance premiums took a dramatic turn higher in the last few years, and that prompted me to get somewhat agitated.
I decided to shop around for lower rates and found that the rates varied a little from company to company, however, The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) was not only the cheapest, but also pretty much the highest rated company in customer satisfaction.
You see, since I was in the military in my younger days, that allows me to qualify for USAA coverage.
I actually used them while in the service and sometime after but changed when I was married for some reason.
I did end up switching to USAA and now can happily say I'm saving approximately $500 per year on the homeowners insurance, and about $100 per year on car insurance.
I believe that since USAA is such a large company, the claims they receive are somewhat "average-out" over the whole US.
I'm sure there are many parts of the US much less prone to natural disaster and less costly to cover.
Hence my rate is now lower.
My case is of course specific to this part of the country but I'm sure analogous situations may exist for you in your section of the country.
If you aren't currently a member of USAA, but are eligible to join because of military service, I strongly encourage you to look into their rates.
If not, please re-evaluate your current insurance company by comparing rates with other providers.
If you do, you may be able to save significant money by switching like I did.
It doesn't hurt to shop around (just takes a little time) and you may be surprise how much you can save.
