    • 1). Insulate your home so the insulation material is in unbroken contact with the drywall. Make sure you have filled all gaps, cracks and compressions to create the best possible seal and protection against water damage. All types of insulation are effective when properly installed, but select a type that meets or exceeds the national code requirements.

    • 2). Install Energy Star-approved heating equipment. Use the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) manual to properly size your heating ducts. Position the heating equipment in a conditioned part of your home, not in the garage or attic. Test for leaks, and adjust the airflow through the ducts for more efficient heating.

    • 3). Install an Energy Star-approved central air conditioner. Select a brand with a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). Call a contractor for seasonal check-ups on your cooling system, and change air filters once a month. Use the ACCA manual to size the air conditioner. Place outdoor units out of the path of direct sunlight.

    • 4). Select energy-efficient windows for your home. Windows should be certified by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Look for windows with Low-E coatings because these are more resistant to fading. Study the Energy Star window guidelines for your region of the country, as the optimal window type varies by climate.

    • 5). Install appliances with high energy ratings. Replace inefficient refrigerators, dishwashers and lighting fixtures with Energy Star-qualified models. Place the most energy-efficient light bulbs in high-traffic rooms such as the kitchen and bedrooms. Use bulbs with a temperature of less than 3,200 degrees Kelvin. Compact fluorescent bulbs are more efficient because they use about 75% less energy than regular incandescent options.
