How to Set Up an Inventory Spreadsheet
- 1). Open your spreadsheet program and in it, a new blank spreadsheet.
- 2). Download an inventory template for your spreadsheet program. Microsoft provides a number of inventory templates, and other spreadsheet manufacturers have templates available as well.
- 3). Review the categories on the template and add any new categories you need. To add a new line to your spreadsheet, place the cursor on the line under the one you want to add, then click "Insert" and choose "Row" from the menu.
- 4). Create your inventory spreadsheet from scratch if you cannot find a suitable templates. Enter each item on your inventory on a separate line.
- 5). Enter column labels at the top of your inventory spreadsheet, or use the ones included on the spreadsheet template. The label on the first column should be "Item" or Description." The subsequent columns can be labeled "Quantity," "Price" and "Total Value."
- 6). Enter a formula to calculate the total value of each line of your spreadsheet. If the "Quantity" is in cell C2 and the "Price Each" is located in cell D2, the formula for the "Total Value" field should be "=C2*D2."
- 7). Copy the formula you just created to the rest of the lines on the spreadsheet. Highlight the formula, hold the "Ctrl" key down and press "C" to copy the formula to the clipboard. Drag your mouse cursor down the rest of the column, hold the "Ctrl" key down and press the "V" key to paste the formula to the rest of the lines.
