How to Paint the Bathtub
- 1
Supplies
Clean the tub with muriatic acid to remove oil and lime deposits. Sand the bathtub with course sand paper, not to remove paint but to create a tooth for the paint to adhere to. Mask the walls of the area to protect them from getting painted. - 2
Bathtub Paint Kit
Cover the faucets and drain with the masking tape, and use a piece of plastic drop cloth to be sure the faucets and drain are covered entirely. Using acrylic paint, apply decorative features to the outside of the tub, if desired. Being careful not to scratch the unprotected acrylic paint. - 3
Face Mask
Open the epoxy paint that came with the kit and quickly apply the paint to the inside wall of the tub, being careful to wear a face mask to prevent inhalation of the fumes. Using a paintbrush, apply to the wall farthest away; load the brush full and apply using a downward stroke, starting at the top of the tub walls. - 4
Decoartive Bathtub & Sink
Completely cover the tub walls and ledge. Allow the paint to dry overnight. When the tub has cured, remove the masking tape. Mix the clear epoxy using 50 percent hardener and 50 percent resin, following the manufacturer's instructions. Apply a thin coat of the clear epoxy to the decorative feature painted in Step 2, making sure to work slowly. - 5
Bath Sink
Use the clear epoxy to cover an acrylic painted sink and make the designs in the bathroom match. Clean up the epoxy paint with turpentine, and dispose of leftover paint properly.
