Insomnia causes tiredness and fatigue, which can prove to be a big problem for many people.
This article offers the reader some suggestions on how to deal with sleep loss and also some ideas on how to cure it.
How does one deal with insomnia? Waking up in the night and not being able to sleep can have a negative effect on our lives.
We become unable to function properly and this can lead to anxiety and depression.
It is best to take action as soon as possible before insomnia becomes a regular occurrence.
The first thing to do is try and pinpoint a cause.
What could causes one to wake up in the night? If it is a need for the toilet that wakes you up then it is advisable not to drink after 6pm, so you have plenty of time to flush it out of your system.
It could also be a urinary tract infection so it may be worth visiting a doctor for a health check up.
Another cause for waking up in the night could be stress.
You may have something on your mind.
Try and find a solution to what is causing the stress.
If you can't then it is likely there are some strong emotions that are being created by your thoughts.
Try and feel them as much as you can without creating a story around them.
Do not follow your thoughts, instead just gently rest with the uncomfortable feelings in silence.
Feeling angry about something that happened during the day can often cause us to wake at night, especially if the situation is unresolved.
Try to do something to break your thoughts, perhaps read a little but acknowledge the feelings.
They may at first grow stronger but then subside once they have been fully felt.
We can often try too hard to get back to sleep and our resistance to being awake can cause us to be agitated, which in turn causes us to feel too awake to sleep.
You may feel like you are never going to get to sleep.
Don't allow these thoughts to make you lose faith.
Try some relaxation exercises, as it is much easier to sleep when you are relaxed.
If you can learn a meditation technique this will be very beneficial.
Not only will you sleep better but you will also feel a greater sense of well being.
If you wake up and start a meditation practice immediately, it will not be long before you feel sleepy again and drop off.
Lastly, having a healthy lifestyle will contribute to you getting a good night's sleep.
Eating a good diet and exercising often will help you to rest easily.
Stay away from stimulants, such as coffee, as much as possible.
