Caring For Your Dog Like an Athlete

103 2
One day you notice that your dog is limping or does not have that spark they once had, something may be wrong and your best friend may need some occupational therapy.
When you hear "occupational therapy" many of us dog owners would never think of your dog.
The fact is our dogs "occupation" is running, jumping, pouncing, and just about anything you can think of that can wear down your pup's joints.
Think of your pup as an elite athlete.
Now think about how much therapy an athlete receives on a regular basis to keep their joints healthy.
Our dogs are plagued with the same joint issues that an athlete would, so shouldn't our dogs receive the same care? Absolutely! To begin assessing your pup's joint health start by observing the way they move around and play for about a week.
Your dog should not have any unexplained limps or back sags (be aware that certain breeds have natural curves in their back).
In addition you dog should walk and run with straight alignment except when showing affection.
Since many breeds are prone to canine arthritis and canine hip dysplasia one may need to do through research on the debilitating diseases your breed is prone to.
Lastly do a thorough examination of your four legged friend.
Look for the following around the joints and back: •swelling •tenderness •redness •aggression when palpating/manipulating If you suspect your dog is having joint or back problem's you should consult your veterinarian immediately.
Addressing these issues early will ensure you pups long term health and happiness.
