How to String Wire for Electric Fence

    Electric Fence Wire Installation

    • 1). Mount universal electric wire insulators on all posts. Metal T-posts require snapping the insulators onto each post at the desired height so that they rest on one of the bumps of the post and cannot slide up or down on the post. If you are using wooden posts, the insulators will attach by hammering one nail through the hole in the center at the height you choose.

    • 2). Install corner wire insulators at each corner post. These will reduce the stress in both perpendicular directions of the wire from each side, so they will not detach from the corner poles.

    • 3). Install multiple strands of electric fence from the ground to the top of the post for the most security and containment of animals, so that each strand surrounds the area in a straight horizontal line.

    • 4). Attach the loose end of the electric wire at one corner insulator by wrapping it around the insulator and walking to the next post while the wire unrolls itself. Putting a stick through the roll of electric fence will enable it to turn smoothly as you walk. Continue around to each post while inserting the wire in the space on the insulators. Make sure that the wire is tight and does not sag or touch any item other than the plastic insulators.

    • 5). Cut wire with a fencing tool and bend it into a U-shape at each stopping point for a gate. Wrap it around the end insulator, like you did at the beginning of the fence line, to secure the wire.

    • 6). Make splices to attach two rolls of electrical wire together by bending each piece into a U-shape and inserting one into the other and crimping tightly with a fencing tool.
